Is cork leather the renewal vegan fashion solution?

by | Sep 27, 2022

A natural material that is plant based, gentler to the environment; soft, agile and smooth:

Yes, it’s Cork Leather.

What is natural cork fabric?

Let’s start with the basics: What is cork?

This natural leather alternative has been used for thousands of years as a stopper for bottles of liquid in the Middle Ages.  In modern times, the most iconic usage is the wine cork bottle stoppers. However, its usage is now on the decline with plastic stoppers available in the market.

Cork is composed of dead cells that accumulate on the outer surface of the cork oak tree (Quercus Suber) that mostly grows on the Southwest Europe and Northwest Africa regions, the majority in Portugal (34% of the world cork forests). Portugal is the world leader in cork production and home to the largest collection of cork oaks.

One of the best alternatives to leather and plastics. In fact, cork is getting popular because of its aesthetic properties.

How is Cork harvested?

Cork trees can live for almost 300 years, according to studies. The cork is taken off the cork tree without having to cut the tree down, and it subsequently grows back. This process not only doesn’t harm the tree, it’s actually good for them. Remember that cork is harvested at the bottom part of the tree meaning that the tree is not affected.

That’s right, this is a natural material that regenerates itself, all on its own and not only is cork leather much less harmful to the environment – its production can actually be encouraging for the planet.

Stripping a cork oak of its bark also enhances the ability to absorb carbon dioxide. The trees keep breathing their lives – and helping to keep the air clean – for years post-harvest. Each time cork is harvested (approximately every nine years), the tree is able to absorb more Co2 in order to assist the process of the bark growing back. The seven million acres of cork forest around the Mediterranean offset 20 million tons of Co2 each year.

As the demand for cork increases, supply will adjust by planting more and more trees, which in fact is very beneficial to the environment.

What is Cork Fabric Used for?

Because of the eco-friendly nature of cork leather and its versatility, more and more brands are being paying attention to it, whether in the fashion world for sustainable items—like wallets, handbags, belts and shoes, or in the automative field and other areas as well.

Cork is used widely in flooring, insulation, cork stoppers for wine bottles, eco-friendly yoga mats and blocks, craft projects, upholstery, etc.

How to care for Cork Fabric?

The best way you can care for your cork accessory is to keep it clean and in a dry place. At Rustique, our jewellery comes in cotton bags. Kindly put away your accessory in the bags provided for.

For general information, in case of dirt or stain, spot treat that place with a damp cloth and leave it out to air dry.  A gentle washing detergent could be used, if required.
